Top 10 Tips of Camera Selection for Underwater

camera selection

Camera selection is the most crucial part in underwater photography. This is because even the greatest photographer can shoot average photos from an average camera. Hence, selection of the best camera is by far the most important concept in underwater photography. There are some desired features which should be considered while selecting a camera for underwater photography.

  • One should use a camera which should be small in size. This will make it easier to shoot pictures underwater. A big, heavy camera will just make the job tougher.
  • The camera should be such that it’s easier to carry and one should be able to beach dive with it.
  • The camera should have features of full manual control. This allows the user to get the desired image with control over shutter speed, aperture, exposure etc.
  • The camera should be compatible with underwater wide angle lenses. Many cameras are not compatible with wide angle lenses and hence you are unable to capture the coral reef landscapes or any other big objects. Hence one should select a camera with macro and wide angle.
  • The camera should have less drag underwater. One should be able to change the lenses of the camera underwater. There are instances where one observes a good landscape or exotic species underwater. These both cases cannot be captured with the same lens. Hence, there are add-on lenses known as wet lens which the camera should have for capturing different things.
  • There are cases when someone captures breathtaking images underwater only to discover that the images are too bright or too dark. Hence, there are cameras that highlight warning or display histogram to help you adjust right exposure.
  • The camera should have good auto focus capabilities. There are some cameras which focus too slowly and by the time focusing is done, the ‘great’ moment expires. Hence, the camera should have a good focus to get a great shot in time.

The camera should be able to take a fisheye lens. There are not many cameras that accept a fisheye lens. This lens is very useful in shooting wide angle which is one of the best shots in underwater photography.
