Underwater is altogether a different world that offers several colorful opportunities for the photographers to capture. South Africa offers many dive destinations and is a photographer’s paradise. Most of the enthusiasts seek the calm depths of the under-waters to capture nature’s work of art. South Africa offers huge varieties both on land as well as underwater.

South Africa is famous as a shark destination and offers white shark diving. Some of the famous diving destinations include:

  • Gansbaai – This is one of the top destinations for sharks and houses the ‘man-eater’. Two islands, Dyer and Geyser Rock, situated around 12 kms from Gansbaai are the hubs for these ‘Great Whites’.Apart from sharks, they also offer seals and jackass penguins and are a delight for the underwater photographers.
  • Sodwana Bay – Located on the east course of South Africa, it offers some of the magnificent coral reefs and amazing dive experiences. The coral reefs also nestle rays, eels, whales, turtles and even sharks. The large corals even have caves, and a reef called 9 Mile harbors several marine species including bottlenose dolphins.
  • Protea Banks – This is considered as one of the best shark dive sites in the world and is one and a half hours drive from Durban. It often has strong currents and is thus advisable for experienced and confidant divers. Protea Banks offers the best diving experience and many creatures like mantas, dolphins, turtles and sharks.
  • Aliwal Shoal Dive Sites – This is the second most popular dive destination in South Africa and is a 35 minutes drive from south of Durban. The place has many marine creatures like dolphins, hump-backed whales, turtles and manta rays. The Ragged Tooth shark can also be found in the place during winter.
  • Plettenberg Bay Dive Site – It is a famous dive destination for the summer months. Whales can be found in the area during their mating and calving seasons. This opens up a greater opportunity to the underwater photographers.
