This is due to the fact that the underwater reefs here are home to thousands of species of fishes and invertebrates. Throughout the Californian waters one will find Anemones, sponges, Crustaceans, attractive Molluscs, colorful nudibranchs and the list goes on and on...!

Here are some of the best diving destinations in California for underwater photography

  • The Mystique of San Miguel – The Park is a huge area of nearly 250,000 acres of sea. The park is made up of four individual islands namely Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa and San Miguel. One will find Wolf eels, Gunnels, nudibranchs, massive Rock Fish, Giant Ling Cods and many more exclusive varieties.
  • Anacapa Island – This region provides great diving destinations like Landings Cove. One can find a wide range of colorful nudibranchs here. There is a huge underwater arch here which provides great macro subjects and excellent fishes to capture. Another great destination is the Pelican Reserve which is great for macro shots, juvenile fishes and exclusive critters.
  • Santa Cruz Island – The further one goes to the west side on Santa Cruz, the better diving and shooting opportunities one gets. One of the best diving destinations here is Gull Island which has large fishes, sea lions, harbor seals as well as purple hydrocorals in its waters. Potato Rock is the destination with colorful nudibranchs and great macro shots.
  • Santa Rosa Island – This destination is known for its lobsters. Many types of lobsters are found here, but the visibility here is not that good.
  • San Clemente Island – This is a great destination owing to its clearest and warmest water. Pyramid Cove is a great underwater photography destination with nice kelp forest, sea fans and structures. Little Flower is another good destination providing large beautiful reefs with Soupfin Sharks.
