Australia is an excellent destination when it comes to underwater photography. Australia offers an excellent water diving experience with a rich and exclusive marine life. One can find a wide range of fishes, large wrecks, seals, nudibranchs and many more exclusive marine life and underwater photographic subjects here.

Here is a short list of major dive sites in Australia which will delight the underwater photographers.

  • Christmas Island – This Island is famous for land crabs and there are as many as 18 varieties of different crabs including the red crab that undergoes mass migration.
  • Cocos (Keeling) – This lagoon is known as ‘diving the desert’. One will find here hard corals, octopus, small wrecks and different sorts of pelagic fishes.
  • The Great Barrier Reef – With 3000 individual reefs, this is the largest coral reef on the planet. One will find a mass of snappers, shoals of jacks, tuna and mackerel as well as nudibranchs and the usual tropical fishes. The world famous Cod Hole dive is located here and one may find dwarf minke whales frequently in this region.
  • Osprey Reef – This is Australia’s best site for shark sighting and one can find huge numbers here. One will find whitetip sharks, grey reef sharks, grey whalers. At some time of the year one may also find tuna, mackerels, tiger sharks and hammerheads.
  • Rowley Shoals – This exquisite dive site boasts around 240 species of reef building corals and more than 700 species of fishes and due to the remote location of this place it is ever more enticing. One may find whitetip sharks and giant potato cod with great visibility.

Besides the places, one may find the angler fish and the leafy sea dragon in various diving sites in Adelaide and Brisbane.
