Antarctica is the windiest and the coldest of all the continents. Reaching this cold destination is a challenge and hence very few people have managed to dive in and photograph the frigid waters of Antarctica. Once reached, it is sure that underwater photography in Antarctica will be the experience of a lifetime.
Here is a short list of major dive sites in Antarctica that will chill one’s spine.
- Peterman Island – This destination regularly features Leopard seals. Leopard seals are more of a curious species than aggressive. This can be demonstrated from the leopard seal photograph itself, where it seems to be smiling for the photograph.
- Palmer Station – This dive site boasts plenty of gastropods, stars, limpets and bryozoans. There are good number of Penguins found in this area as well.
- South Shetland Islands – This dive site is great when visited around March. This is the adolescent state of Penguin chicks, which are quite curious about the photographers. The site is good for whale watching as well as Aurora Australis. During some other time of the year Fur Seal and Leopard Seal are also visible.
- Verdansky Station – This is yet another diving destination with full of Penguins. Many Sea slugs are found here with amphipods, sponges and worms. These varieties are found in a wide range of sizes and color here.
- Gouldier – This is a perfect diving destination if you are looking for colorful nudibranchs, some enigmatic fishes and anemones. Leopard Seals are also seen here occasionally.
